Master Classes Summer 2008

Zvi Meniker and Jürgen Schrape:
July 20 - 26

Les Caractères de la Danse
French Baroque dances - a practical course for harpsichordists, violinists, flutists, etc. With Zvi Meniker, harpsichordist, and Jürgen Schrape, dancing master.

Between 1660 and 1760 almost all dances in Europe were French, and
every musician (and educated person) was familiar with the steps and
characters of the Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte, Bourrée, Passacaille,
etc. The bulk of French music of the period consists of dances, while
the works of German and English composers also show how well-
acquainted they were with French dance.

This couse is designed to bring some primary experience to all
students of Baroque music who perform French dances. Every day, we
will learn and practice the steps of different dances, and will try to
realize our knewly-won knowledge on our instruments. As our performing
repertoire, we will mainly use dances (Ordres, Suites, Partitas) by
French composers, but also by Bach, Telemann, Purcell and other German
and English masters. The dancing repertoire will be decided upon
closer to the course.

The course is open to harpsichordists and other instrumentalists who
have Baroque dance music in their repertory (violinists, flutists,
recorder players, oboists, gambists and others).

Course given in: English, German, Russian
