The keyboard music of William Byrd and his school
The central focus of this course will be the keyboard music of William Byrd and his school - Bull, Gibbons,Tomkins, Farnaby, Philips and others. The immensely rich keyboard repertoire of the Virginalists offers an amazing variety of forms and styles. Polyphony, virtuosity, rhythmic wit and complexity, melancholy, the spirit of folk music, aristocratic restraint - only few schools of harpsichord playing succeeded to combine and integrate such richness of expression. Various aspects of playing and performing this music will be discussed, such as instruments, tuning, fingering, ornamentation, mensural time, dances, etc.
Next to a selection of virginal pieces participants are requested to bring a free choice of pieces of other styles and periods as well.
Course given in: English, Dutch, German, French
